The Molar mass of magnesium nutride is 100.95g/mol. Their density stands at 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium Nitride is totally dissolved in acid and water, but is dissolvable in both ethanol and ether.

The melting point for magnesium nitride ranges from 1500 to 1500 degrees. Magnesium Nitride, as with many metal nitrides, reacts water to produce ammonia. It is frequently used as a catalyst. React with acid , or aqueous nonmetallic oxides in order to produce ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.

Magnesium Nitride is a clay-like substance found in nature. Magnesium Nitride has a high corrosion resistance and significantly increases the efficiency of production. Magnesium also has high thermal conductivity, as well having a high resistance to corrosion and resistance to temperature. Magnesium is also of great significance as it's used as a catalyst for the synthesis of boron nitrogen.

What is Magnesium Nitride Used For?

How do I Make Magnesium Nitride?

At present, the main methods for making magnesium nitride are direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, reaction method of carbon with nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow using a magnesium coil blast method in nitrogen atmosphere the low pressure chemical gas as a complementary product method, self propagating high temperature synthesis method, nano magnesium nitride synthesizer, etc.

Recently, G. Soto et al. prepared amorphous magnesium nitride films with different Mg:N ratios on Si substrates in a molecular nitrogen atmosphere using pulse laser deposition. These methods restrict their industrial application due to high cost, long process and complex operation of equipment or low yields of magnesium Nitride.

While the direct reaction of magnesium powder with nitrogen is of economic value, the production of magnesium oxide powder requires higher reaction temperature and longer reaction time. Additionally, the form of the particles is a bit lopsided and easy to form agglomerates, and therefore, does not meet the demands of industrial-grade quality. The NH3 is decomposed into Nwhich has broken bonds more easily than N2, and the decomposed H2 is able to inhibit the formation of MgO. So, ammonia could be used as the nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. used liquid ammonia as nitrogen source to prepare magnesium nitride using direct nitriding of magnesium powder. The following conclusions could be drawn: With thermodynamic analyses, liquid ammonia could react with magnesium powder far more easily than nitrogen, resulting in magnesium nitride. magnesium nitride with good purity and uniform particles can easily be prepared at 600 and ammonia at 1hand then heated to 800degrees, with an ammonia flow rate of 500ml/min as well as an nitriding duration of 1h.
