What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
Many alloys are added onto steel to increase the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel, is known as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of corrosive environments.
There are several different kinds of stainless steel , 316. Some of the most popular types are L F, N, and H variations. Each variant is different and each one is designed for specific purposes. L refers to 316L as having the lowest carbon content, which is below the 316.
316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more durable even at high temperatures. They also cannot be hardened with heat treatments and can be easily shaped and stretched.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
The stainless steel of 316L is lower in carbon than 316. But despite the smaller carbon percentage, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way. The cost is similar, and both are durable and resistant to corrosion, making an ideal choice for extremely stressful conditions.
For projects that require a significant amount in welding is a better choice , as 316L is more susceptible to corrosion from welding rather than 316L (corrosion of the weld). But, the 316 is able to be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. This is a appropriate stainless steel for temperatures and high corrosion applications, which is why it is so sought-after for marine and construction.
It is not clear if 316 or 316L is the best option. The 304 is comparable to 304L but the cost is much lower. Both are not as durable as the 317 or 317L as they have greater molybdenum content as well as better overall corrosion resistance.
